Born in 1983 in Seoul, Korea
Lives and works in Paris, France
I create imaginary natural scenes which are simultaneously real and unreal, exploring the tensions between conflicting cultural or political ideologies. Growing up in Korea, a country divided by an untraversable physical and political border, I was inspired to interrogate our perspective and perception of the world through time and physical space.
Beginning with pictorial elements such as gesture in historical paintings, I use Korean and Western art as both a formal reference of space and landscape composition. My work examines social, political, and emotional experiences in physical spaces, both real and imagined.
The concept of landscape painting in Western culture, which can be defined as a finite area as seen from a single viewpoint, is combined in my work with Korean Pungkyeong 풍경, which approaches landscapes not from the perspective of a human viewer, but from a larger compositional balance that signifies the vast power of the universe. The question that I ask through my paintings is can we perceive a landscape outside of ideological framworks or is our vision inevitably shape by them.
